Genoa, Genoa CFC and Argentina
Genoa, Genoa CFC and Argentina
In the late nineteenth century, Genoa was one of Europe’s main gateways to the world. Thousands of men and women departed from its port in search of work and a future. Argentina was one of their main destinations. The journey was long and often difficult, but full of hope. The migrants brought their language, traditions, food, music… and football.
A strong Genoese community settled in the La Boca neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. In their own dialect, the Genoese were called “Zeneixi”: in Argentina, the word became “Xeneizes”. To this day, this remains the nickname of Boca Juniors, one of South America’s best-loved teams.
Genoa and Buenos Aires share maritime roots, a popular spirit and a deep love of football.
